2020 March 23 St. Thomas News

Father James Burns will have the Easter Vigil mass at St. Thomas on Saturday, April 11th, at 7:00 pm.

Masses at St. Anne’s in Le Sueur are Saturdays at 5:15 p. m., and Sundays 8 and 10:30 a. m. with Father Chris Shofner.

Barb Scholl Miller, mother of 15 children, including Tammy and Brett Simon, Val Jr. and Theresa Miller of St. Thomas, passed away March 21, 2020. Barb was well known in the tractor-pulling circuit and worked side-by-side with her husband in farming operations. Also well-known, after she’d have a baby, she’d be in the cab of a tractor with the newborn in an infant seat with her as she worked the fields. She was dedicated. Our sympathy to Val, Sr. and their family, especially Tammy and Val, Jr.
and our sympathies to Carly, Mason, Lindsey, and Addie on the passing of their Grandma.

Megan Rutt keeps racking up the awards! She was named the 6th All Decade Bethany College Indoor Track and Field Student Athlete. Megan graduated from Bethany in December. Congratulations, Megan

A picture appeared on Facebook awhile ago, of the Sullivans visiting Iris at Praha Village on St Patrick’s Day. During this time of mandatory social distancing, just when we needed it... so heart-warming.

Bob and Becky Block returned home on St. Patrick's Day from a Wendinger Tour bus trip down south. The destination was to have been New Orleans. Five days into theip, it was necessary to turn around and head back home due to the corona virus threat. Just like here, everything was closing. However, the first 5 days were filled with amazing sites. Coincidentally, Bruce and Betty Burns Olson of Le Sueur, were on the trip as well! Upon reaching St. Louis, all 40 of the tour goers rode the tram to the top of the Gateway Arch. Later in the day, they were present for the "Walk of the Ducks" at the Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis. The next day they enjoyed touring Graceland, before heading to Vicksburg, Mississppi. On Sunday, March 15, they all toured the Civil War Battlefield in Vicksburg where 4000 troops from Minnesota took part in that battle. Sadly, 400 serviceman from Minnesota lost their lives. Minnesota had the most decorated serviceman at Vicksburg and was chosen to lead the victory march. Later that day they enjoyed traveling the Natchez Trace Parkway, a per-civil war route which brought goods from the Mississippi River to Nashville. In Natchez, they toured the 6 story 30,000 square foot octagonal Longwood Mansion. That evening they enjoyed a 4 course dinner at the Magnolia mansion. The next morning should have taken them to New Orleans and beyond, but with everything closing, it was homeward bound, thankful to arrive home safely.

Got Grands busy with all their free time...Katie is learning songs by heart on the piano….Andy learning songs by heart on his violin… Artistic Maddie is painting rocks, and this writer just learned how to Skype. Don’t call me. When the phone rings, I don’t know whether to run for the comb... or the phone. Keep in touch, keep the distance, and sanitize, sanitize, sanitize...God Bless.

Flush only toilet paper! Jeff Steinborn 03/18/20 03:54 AM
Due to an increased demand and subsequent shortage of toilet paper as a result of COVID-19, we have heard of the increased use and flushing of non-flushable materials such as baby wipes, napkins and paper towels. While the “flushable” wipes concern is not new to wastewater facilities, there is an increased risk due to the current shortage of toilet paper. We ask that our community members pay extra attention to what they are using and flushing and remind you not to flush anything other than toilet paper.

The COVID-19 outbreak has created additional stress and uncertainty for everyone, and while we understand that supply shortages exacerbate these stresses and challenges, it is important to keep in mind that flushing anything other than toilet paper can create expensive problems for homeowners and your local facilities. Flushing wipes (even those labeled “flushable”) and other non-toilet paper materials causes clogs, backups, equipment and pipe breakages, and in bad cases, can even force raw sewage back into peoples’ homes. Because we are a public utility, the cost to repair these damages is unfortunately borne by the public. We want to avoid any and all of these problems and allow our facility workers to focus on their jobs to keep our facility up and running.

Properly addressing this issue requires each of us to be extra mindful, especially in the days and weeks ahead, but also beyond the containment of COVID-19. We ask that you pay close attention to what is being used in your home, and make sure you are only flushing toilet paper and properly disposing of all other materials.

As a reminder, the following products are NOT flushable and must be disposed of in a waste basket:
• Paper towels
• Napkins
• Kleenex and other tissues
• Wet wipes/baby wipes (even those labeled as “flushable” wipes)
• Diapers
• Feminine hygiene products
• Gauze/Band-Aids

Thank you for helping keep our community and facilities clean and functioning!

Congratulations to Le Center St. Patrick’s Day Royalty, Allison McCabe won Miss Shamrock, Erin O’Rourke Schultz won Miss Leprechaun plus the Gregory O’Connell Award, and Brooklynn Anderly won Miss Irish Rose. A few gathered for the Mulligan Stew, Saturday. Grand Marshals, Don and Mary Louise Halloran Hayden, enjoyed Mulligan Stew with a small group. Mary looked lovely in her green jacket and green elegant western hat. Their son, John Hayden from Buffalo and Don’s sister Dorothy Dinwittie were among them, to help celebrate. The Halloran clan was well represented in the parade, and Tim Halloran and Dick O’Connel marched with the Hibernians We enjoyed our Mulligan stew and laughs, from a distance, with “Cherry Cheeks” Retka , Eric O’Connell and Davie Connelly. After the parade more folks gathered at the American Legion.

Congratulations to Belle Plaine’s 2020 St. Patrick’s Day Royalty: Hayley O’Brien, Brooke McGlinchey and Cassandra Leeper. A drive through Belle Plaine, showed the counts were down a little. Folks were out and about wearing their green.

Bragging Rights: John, “Mr. Hayden” an assistant principal at the Buffalo Junior High School, where our grandson Andy attends. After he checked his phone to see a picture of who Andy is, he said., “Andy’s not a problem.”

Sunday night, Grandma texted their adult children, “Grandpa and Grandma’s Daycare is OPEN!” Daughter-in-law text back. “OH, NO. IT’S NOT! They’re 70!”

We are taking breaks, from doing nothing, to go to the drive-up at any McD’s for a shamrock shake. We’ve got to be careful, to take this pandemic serious, we definitely wouldn’t want to carry it home to loved ones.
Have a good week folks. Sanitize, cover coughs, stay home and keep the distance...
