Wish we could watch this on a dvd!

John “Jack” Gill (July 2,1952-January 3, 2021) was found on January 3, at his apartment here in St. Thomas in the Callahan Store Building where he has been living the last few years. The huge and close Gill families included Beatrus, Alois, Celia, Hilary, Joseph, Alphonse, Norbert, Rosie and a sister who died in infancy. Jack will be laid to rest near his parents, Hilary “Hilly” and Joyce Gill, at St. Joseph’s cemetery in Lexington. “He was a smart fellow with a kind heart.” Our sympathies to Jack’s family..and friends.

Visitation and Mass of Christian Burial for Jeanette Sullivan Gloege were held Tuesday and Wednesday. Jeanette was one of ours, a daughter of Leo and Mag, who with her siblings received all their first sacraments here at St. Thomas. “Nettie” was a happy-go-lucky gal, who could be seen kneeling reverently here at St. Thomas Church or Our Lady of the Prairie, any church, at the D. F. L. Convention in the cities with her dad, she could be the voice promoting Belle Plaine’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration on KCHK, or dancing on the bar at Kay’s Place. She loved life and fun... laughing, loving and loud with a heart of gold. She could and would help anybody. Our sympathies to Kirk and their family. Jeanette’s siblings Mary Kay and Pat precede her, our sympathies also to Joannie, Buckeye, Tilley, Dan and their families. Jeanette is ‘laid to rest’ here in St. Thomas. R. I. P. Nettie.

The last time we saw “Nettie” was at mass in St. Thomas, October’s mass, where a big “visitor” crawled from the first grate into the isle, shortly before Communion. Nettie, who has no love for the visitor’s kind, had a very close isle-view, let out an uncontrollable gasp, heard throughout the church, and she moved to a safer position between her nephew Kevin and his wife, Beth. Kevin proceeded to remove an entrance carpet and placed it over the grate, trapping the visitor. Nettie was “long gone” before it was removed by Todd Sullivan after mass.

Stay Safe...and God bless.

Sadly, Mary Walker passed away on December 29, 2020 at Fairview Southdale Hospital, in Bloomington. “Beyond great.” She “loved us Walker children and our families like her own and happily joined our family with such grace 17 years ago, and loved our father.” Jim and most of their family were at her bedside. We will miss her cheerful spirit, generous heart, and friendly smile. Our sympathies to Jim and their blended family. R. I. P., Mary.

Please, continue prayers for Jeanette Sullivan Gloege.

Heard from Sheila Halloran Soukup in Anchorage, Alaska. They’re doing good... keeping up with the St. Thomas News...Sheila, you’re precious.

Greetings to our family members...cousins included, all of the St. Thomas Community..and friends.. We have a lot of thinking time, like this time of year, after mass Dad would drive out onto the St. Thomas Lake ice with our 52 Ford, drive and slide, “make donuts”... Don’t try that now, that was before laws. Dad was a little naughty...but a lotta fun...Having fun in my memories. Keep having fun in these tough Covid times. There’s a light somewhere out there.

Mary Walker was rushed early last Tuesday to the New Prague Hospital with a severe infection of the Pancreas. She was transferred Wednesday evening in the blizzard to Fairview-Southdale Hospital due to her systems shutting down. She remains in ICU presently without a known time frame for recovery. Due to the Pandemic no visitors and no contact, not even family. Jim was able to wish her a Merry Christmas by phone. Please keep her in your prayers.
And Jeanette Gloege is in need of healing prayers also. As of this writing she’s still at Abbott. It’s hard to picture these gals laid up.

Gerald Kemp of Jessenland Township passed away at his home. Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, December 30th,. Jerry is Murial O’Neill’s brother and the father of Margot Kemp, who provided music for our masses with Sam Burns, at St. Thomas occasionally. Our sympathies to their families.

Heard from Margie Halloran Eichens: In Margie’s informative letter, she listed many losses, (Rosemary, Ron, Iris and Tommy are now resting among our Dearly Departed here at St. Thomas) and counted many blessings this Christmas season. “There was no place like home for 2020.” Graduations from high schools and colleges. Thankful for sister Rosanne, daughters Lisa, Mary and “Zoom.” She could ‘actually see’ to visit with sister Sheila and Jerry Soukup in Anchorage, nephews Matt in Alaska and Michael in Washington D. C. and brother Bruce and Cathy Halloran’s family. Margie and Gordy’s family live in South Minneapolis. Daughter Ruth drew a beautiful lawn sign their neighbors enjoyed with a 1978 quote, from neighbor and family friend Meta, about their neighborhood - “A Country Cow pasture -100 years ago.” (In 1960, north of Starring Lane in Eden Prairie were horses still grazing on rolling green hills). Daughter Ruth’s friends and heroic patient advocates, Kent Heckenlively and Dr. Judy Mikovits, who published their New York Times Bestseller “Plague of Corruption: Restoring Faith in the Promise of Science.” with a foreword written by Robert Kennedy, Jr.. Margie and Gordy met at the Park Ballroom in April of 1954. She sent a picture of their wedding party, September 10, 1960 with our grand St. Thomas altar adorned with gladiola bouquets as a backdrop. Gordy and Margie celebrated their 60th Anniversary a few times. After 60 years of marriage, St. Thomas folks could still recognize the bride as Margie, sister Roseanne, brothers Bruce and Gary Halloran...and Gordy Eischens, sounds like he’s still the love of her life. Margie’s Mom and brother Gary used to write the St. Thomas column for the Times years ago. St. Thomas knows: If Margie were writing this St. Thomas column, it wouldn’t be a column. It would have to be “The St. Thomas Page”...or even paper! The few times Dad was a patient at the hospital where Margie worked as an RN, he was always in better spirits after her visit.

Not St. Thomas but: Our hearts go out to the family of Pete and Gayle McGillen, on the passing of their son Ryan, and nephew of this writers dear friend, the late Mary McGillen of Kilkenny. In memories, Ryan will always be “a great guy and a well known John Deere salesman to many folks in our area.” Our sympathies to Pete and Gayle and their family.

From the other Irish St. Thomas Church in Jessenland written by Tom’s brother, Denny Graham: “At Christmas, our Mom would tell us about Christmas when she was little. She was born in 1917 and lived on a farm on Silver Lake in Jessenland Township. She told about getting all bundled up and getting in the sleigh to go to midnight mass at the Jessenland Church. On the way, they would meet up with the sleighs of neighbors going to church as well. She said you could tell which neighbor it was by the sound of their sleigh bells and when you would look in the distance, you could see the lanterns of all these farm families and their teams of horses and sleighs heading to church. She said that seeing all those lantern lights, hearing the sleigh bells, and looking up at the stars in the sky, “Tt was almost magical.” He wishes he would have asked more questions, and “wondered what it was like for all those teams and full sleighs to get down those slippery hills – the Flynn hill, the Driscoll hill, the Doheny hill, and the Terrio hill – all a challenge in those days. What a sight it must have been to see all those teams and to hear all those bells converging on that little white church in the darkness of night.” Denny wondered how they kept probably 30 or more teams tied up. Then he went on to “imagine how the inside of the church would have been decorated with only candles and lanterns providing light. The mass would have been a long Latin one with hymns played on the pump organ with all these hard working farm families gathered to celebrate the birth of our Savior. It must have been quite a sight!” Magical.

We don’t all have the Henderson hills, but did you think of our own ancestors while reading Denny’s story? The route they took to church? The feather ticks and quilts they were “bundled” under? The stars? Some coming across the lake? The stillness when the sleigh stopped? Light in the church windows? And once inside, the warmth and the nativity in place.? Wishing all a happy and healthy New Year..
