Myself, and Greg Graham have been talking lately that we would love to start a town team here in Henderson. There has been interest from other players also that would be interested in playing for a Henderson town team as well. We just don't know how to go about it.

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/13/05 03:06 PM

I would imagine that Troy Koester or Tony Nagel may have some insight on starting a team. They played for the Green Isle team for years.

Other names:

Dick Moriarty (member of LSH baseball association)
J. D. Pesch (involved with Henderson youth baseball)

I'd love to see town team baseball back in Henderson. Whatever the city can do outside of spending money is yours for the asking.

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/13/05 05:02 PM

Now is that Camel writing?

What about the ball field near hilltop? Is that owned by the city or the school?

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/13/05 05:21 PM

I know this is putting the cart before the horse but my vote for a name would have to be "Henderson Tigers!"

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/13/05 06:11 PM

This is Camel -

The ballfield at Hilltop would be great if some investment could be made to sod the infield, build dugouts (volunteers) and somehow arrange a grandstand into the hill behind home plate. Finding a league might be kind of tough. The Crow River Valley (including Green Isle, Norwood, Hamburg, Glencoe and 8 others all the say to St. Boni) and the Dakota-Rice-Scott (basically Union Hill to Northfield) are both full (12 and 13 teams). The Carver Central, (LeSueur, Belle Plaine, Arlington, St. Peter and the like, 15 teams) has also added a number of teams recently. I might even apply for the manager position. I'm sure Skeddy would come out of retirement, he is a state champ, ya know.
Posted By: Lon Berberich

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/13/05 07:14 PM

You have a good start already-Koester as a manager would be excellent. The field at Hilltop is owned by the school so you would need to work things out with them regarding use, concessions, licensing, etc. Also, you would need about $4000 for umpires, catchers equipment, balls, field supplies, etc. assuming about a dozen home games; probably another $4000-$6000 for uniforms, bats, and things like that (could be paid for by the players). Some of these expenses could be offset by concessions assuming things could get worked out with the school. The leagues mentioned above are all possibilites but they should be contacted by September to get on their fall agendas in order to get in a league for 2006. In the last few years Gibbon and the Cleveland Condors from this area have started teams and they appear to be doing well from an organizational standpoint (Gibbon is drawing very well after being out of baseball for over 30 years).

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/13/05 10:54 PM

A huge undertaking indeed. But imagine town ball up on the hill in Henderson. Under the lights (eventually) on a warm summer's night. The sounds and smells of baseball in our hometown. Just imagine.

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/14/05 05:28 AM

Well I don't know much about getting a team up and going but it sure would be great to have a hometown team. A fundraiser would probably be well supported if one was needed.
Posted By: Cody Boelter

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/14/05 05:55 AM

I just think a town team would be a great thing for Henderson to have, and personally I would be willing to help get the field in shape, or meet with people to get it organized.
Posted By: velocity

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/14/05 06:45 PM

You could start with a fundraiser at the field. Not sure if the school district would allow concert/dance fund raising effort at the field? Serving alcohol would probably be an issue, but to get an improved facility something might be arranged.

If the Phy-Ed. t-shirts sold so well I bet you could get a number of people to buy replica jerseys and hats for a town team. (Count me in, especially if you come up with a retro orange and black color scheme). Would there be any businesses in town that would support a team and sponsor signage on the park? I know that back in my fast pitch softball days it was a pain in the koester...I mean kiester to get money from already strapped businesses. How great it would be to come home for Sauerkraut Days and take in a ball game....maybe fireworks after the game?
Posted By: Jeff Steinborn

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/14/05 07:13 PM

I think to start off you'll need the backing of an organization much like the Le Sueur Baseball Assoc. (not sure if Henderson is included in that). Maybe said organization would help or could one be formed in Henderson?

Rick Bruns would be the guy to ask.

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/15/05 07:54 PM

Let's have a meeting and explore the possibilities. This would take a lot of volunteers, planning, and long term committments but we'll never know if we can do it unless we give it a try. I'm willing to get involved. I don't know a thing about organizing a town baseball team but I would like to help with the fundraising. Let's do it!

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/27/05 08:20 PM

I doubt you're talking about a co-ed team, nor would I really want to play. However, I do think it would be great to have a town team and I would be willing to help with fundraising, etc.
Posted By: Jeremy Mathwig

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/27/05 09:50 PM

I actually think Danielle is on to something....or maybe on something. But a co-ed town team would probably be the first of it's kind, and I of course being the proud athletic supporter aka jock strap that I am, would be all for that. If you are looking for someone to drive around in a cart or on a four wheeler, pulling a piece of fence behind them to drag the fields, I can't think of anyone more qualified than myself. Being as I did get my Master's degree in field dragging. Or if you are just looking for an old out of shape centerfielder I suppose I could throw my name in the hat there as well.

Jeremy,

Maybe you could dust off your business and marketing skills to help this group raise some money first.

Re: Town Team Baseball - 07/27/05 11:17 PM

Maybe that is a good idea Jeff. One would think it would be fairly simple to market a co-ed naked ball team though. Imagine the uniforms?

Re: Town Team Baseball - 08/08/05 04:24 AM

I hope that everyone that has shown interest in exploring the possibilty of town team baseball will come to the meeting Julie has set up for 6:15 on August 10 at the Community Bldg.I spent a lot of time at the State Legion Tourney this past weekend in LeSueur. A decent baseball field in Henderson would not only be great for a town team, but it would also give our kids in school another field besides Bruce Frank Field to play on and it also gives both the communities the opportunity to sponsor larger tournaments that can be great money makers for future field improvements. I hope there's a good crowd that shows up at the meeting. I don't think it was in the paper so spread the word!

Re: Town Team Baseball - 08/08/05 04:34 AM

I forgot to mention that Jordan won the State American Legion tourney over Pipestone with Holdingford taking 3rd place over LaCrescent. There was some very good games and it was a lot of fun. I also want to add that our local American Legion Color guard looked very impressive doing the flag presentation before the games on Sunday. Congratulations to the chairmen-Lon Berberich, Mike Keenan, and Pat Goggin for planning and running an outstanding state event!

Re: Town Team Baseball - 08/12/05 09:33 PM

How did the meeting go Wednesday night? Wanted to attend but had to see about a friend turning 30. Rode my bicycle up to the field last night to check things out for the heck of it. There really is a lot of room up there. All kinds of room for parking (between bus garage and field). The embankment along the 3rd baseline is a great seating area to complement a grandstand. All in due time I realize but it's always fun to daydream. Future state tournament host with LeSueur???????

Re: Town Team Baseball - 08/13/05 12:56 AM

Since the field is owned and used by the school district, couldn't they help pay for some of the improvements (ie. dugouts, sod for the infield...)?

Re: Town Team Baseball - 08/15/05 08:33 PM

There was quite a large levy recently passed now wasn't there. Don't think the ballfield improvements were included in this one but maybe there'll be some leftover funds that can be allocated towards some improvements there. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

There will be a meeting at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, August 25 in the Community Building at 600 Main Street for all interested parties (possible players, fund-raisers, board members, organizers and just interested people) to discuss starting a town team baseball program in Henderson. 8 people at a meeting tonight in the Community Building to discuss a possible Henderson town team-at this point it looks like about 15 possible local players are committed and everything seemed postive to keep moving ahead. Another meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, September 8, 2005 at 7:00 P.M. in the Community Building; reporter Troy Koester will be getting a story to the newspaper for next weeks addition. At the next meeting it is hoped a 7 person local Henderson baseball board can be formed; a decision can be reached on which league to apply to for entry in 2006; permission can be obtained from school officals regarding use of the facility and making some improvements; fund-raising ideas put in place; equipment/uniform ideas discussed; a manager approved and other things. Anyone interested in playing, being on the board, fund-raising or helping out in any way are invited to attend the next meeting, if unable to attend let either Jamess Kroehler, JD Pesch, Denny Graham, Troy Kester or myself know your interests with respect to organizational things and talk to Greg Graham, Cody Boelter or any of the above about playing.

The Henderson Baseball Association is in the process of incorpoating into a non profit organization; charter memberships are being offered for $50 (so far Dennis Graham, Don Boehne, Lon Berberich and Keith Swenson have paid their charter membership fees). Charter members will elect up to 7 directors at the first official meeting of the organizations set for Monday, September 26, 2005 at 7:00 P.M. at the Henderson Community Building. Everyone is eligible and welcomed to become a charter member. More details will follow, but Tony Nagel and Keith Swenson will be offering charter memberships during the All School reunion this coming Saturday night. Membership information can be obtained from any of the above or Troy Koester, Bryan Petzel, Cody Boelter, Greg Graham, Frank Bigaouette or James Kroehler.

As Lon mentioned above, we are selling $50 charter memberships in the new Henderson Baseball Assoc. Charter members will recieve a certificate suitable for framing as well as being a part of electing a board of directors that will oversee the running of the Tigers and working with the school board to make improvements to our local "field of dreams." We're hoping that our annual meetings will be also some type of social event as well as the business meeting. Those of you going to the all-school reunion tomorrow can join the association by visiting with Mayor Keith Swenson and Skeddy Nagel as they will have the info. If you aren't going to be in town tomorrow and would like to support the Tigers by joining the association, make your $50 check out to: Henderson Baseball Association and send it to: Henderson Baseball Assoc, PO Box 41, Henderson,MN 56044 We will then send you your certificate. Re: Town Team Baseball - 09/19/05 04:05 PM

There is clay available from the HHH Metroome, all we need is a dumptruck or large trailer to pick it up. It would work wonderfully to rebuild the pitcher's mound and solidify the batter's boxes at Hilltop. They want to see it go to a good cause. One step towards credibility is a suitable playing surface - and "nice mound" is one of the finest compliments a ballpark, or anything for that matter, can hear. Maybe you could have a "Get your Metrodome clay in a jar day" as a promotion.

The Henderson Baseball Association (H.B.A. from here forward) is having its comedy night on Jan. 7 at the Brass Top Hall. We are learning many valuable lessons through this entire process. One of those lessons is letting people know how important it is that they let us know if they are coming to our event on Jan. 7. The response to the Silent Auction online has been tremendous, and a big thanks to Skeddy Nagel and Jeff Steinborn for their contributions. We've heard many people indicate that they will be joining us for our event on Jan. 7, but it's important that they call the Brass Top (507.248.3743) for their reservation to ensure that we prepare enough food. The lesson we've learned is that we have to be much more proficient in getting a head count for our event. If you plan on joining us please call and arrange for your seat. If you're not but know someone who is, please gently tell them to do the same. We have been overwhelmed by the auction donations, the charter memberships and the enthusiasm we've received to get ourselves off the ground. Trust that every effort will be made by the H.B.A. to give back to the community what has been given to it.

Thank you for the reminder. I just made the call to the Brass top. It will be the most fun available in Sibley County in January.

Aren't there advanced tickets for sale from the players?

Is the team going to have a mascot? Cheerleaders? eek Maybe provide haircuts once a month? I think any gimmick that can be ripped off from the Saints should be used. Will beer be available or will we have to smuggle it in? Go Tigers!

Re: Town Team Baseball - 01/03/06 03:39 PM

We are the Henderson Tigers and you Norton are more than welcome to dress up in a Tiger suit if you'd like. We are allowed to sell 3.2 beer at games so no smuggling allowed! Happy New Year!

Re: Town Team Baseball - 01/03/06 04:36 PM

Yes!! but what about the cheerleaders?
Posted By: Skeddy

Re: Town Team Baseball - 01/04/06 12:00 AM

There are no cheerleaders in baseball. Just hecklers, beer guzzlers, and all sorts of townsfolk. C'mon Steiny! Remember when Norm Green had the Electric Stars dancers in the stands for North Stars hockey games? Now that was stupid!

Re: Town Team Baseball - 01/04/06 06:55 PM

You're right, but we could have a big chicken in the stands.

Re: Town Team Baseball - 08/15/17 01:58 AM

This is the beginnings of the discussion for town team baseball returning to Henderson.

Funny to go back and read some of these submissions.

Congrats to Cody Boelter, Matt Graham and Greg Graham, who have been key components to the team since day 1 and were instrumental in making it happen.

The state amateur tournament is really the pinnacle for anyone that spends their summer chasing around to ball parks on weekends and weeknights chasing a ball. Most summers end in defeat, and unless the Tigers win six straight games and claim a state title, this one will too.

But 15,000+ people will visit beautiful facilities in Green Isle, Hamburg and Norwood over the next three weekends. The ball is actually pretty impressive, if you haven't been to a state tournament, consider making a visit.
