The first meeting of the LSH Elementary Configuration Review Task Force began right after 7:00 PM, with a welcome from Superintendent Dave Johnson and introductions.
Review and discussion of task force charge statement: After introductions, the task force focused on the primary goal of the evening, which was to review the three-page task force charge statement. Linda Schroeder, facilitator, talked through the various sections of the charge. Elementary principal Bill Bjorndahl provided a brief perspective on the rationale for the creation of the task force.
The charge statement focused on task force charge and responsibilities, task force authority,
communicating task force progress, securing public feedback, desired results, timeline, resource support, task force membership, and expectations of an effective task force member.
It was clarified that the charge statement asks the task force to develop a recommendation that
acknowledges the continuing use of our two existing elementary sites into the future. This part of the charge from the School Board reflects the recommendations made by the LSH Facilities Steering Committee in July 2002.
Developing meeting schedule: The group reviewed possible meeting dates and finalized the schedule
for the fall and into the winter. Meetings will begin at 6:30 PM and will end at 9:00 PM. (This timeline may be reviewed at a later date if it is discovered that it doesn≠t provide enough time.)
Meeting dates have been set as follows:
Thursday, September 28
Thursday, October 5
Thursday, October 26
Thursday, November 16
Monday, November 20
Tuesday, November 21
Monday, December 4
Thursday, January 4, 2007
Thursday, January 18, 2007
Monday, January 22, 2007
There was discussion of also setting Tuesday, December 5, as an alternate meeting date. That decision
will be finalized later.
The group will discuss meeting locations on September 28.
Communication: The task force discussed the importance of communicating regularly with interested
district residents about the process. It was agreed that the meeting summaries (or shorter version of longer meeting summaries) would be made available to parents and other interested district residents after each meeting. Possibilities for dissemination include posting on the district website and having copies available at district school buildings. The group also discussed the fact that there would be opportunity sometime during the process for public updates and public feedback.
Meeting observers: The group talked about their interest in and commitment to welcoming interested
observers to task force meetings. After discussion, it was agreed that any interested individuals will be encouraged to attend meetings and observe the process. While observers will not have the opportunity to speak formally to the task force during the meeting, they will be encouraged to talk one-on-one anytime with individual members of the task force outside the task force meetings.
Review of the proposed timeline and action steps was postponed until the next meeting. The meeting
was adjourned by 9:30 PM.
