In search of Devil's Jump-Off stories: It has been suggested by certain individuals (who shall remain nameless) that the Devil's Jump-Off locale has been (is?) the site of many parties of the type not normally reported in the Independent. Is this true? Can anyone verify, or perhaps set the record straight, that it is nothing more than a base canard? Of course, if you share something here it will go no further. It will remain a Chatter Secret. You might even win a free Devil's Jump-Off book.

I seem to remember a few keggers at Devil's Jumpoff. Being underage, I was there to observe and not participate.

Just to repeat: We will be in Henderson at Christmas Expo, December 6, 2 to 4pm at the Wild Edge Center signing books. Special gift price of $10.00 with all proceeds going to the Joseph R. Brown River Center. Keep those DJ-O stories coming. I'd still like to hear what anyone knows about how the place came to be called Devil's Jump-Off. Maybe someone can claim naming rights and go down in history.

The Devil's Jump-Off website [below] is now LIVE and taking orders for the book, "An account of the curious events at Devil's Jump-Off." On the order page check "Other Publications" for other books for sale, all benefiting the Joseph R. Brown Minnesota River Center.

I will be in Henderson on Sunday, December 6, 2 - 4pm at the Wild Edge Event Center signing and selling books.

Brother Bill is correct. Our great aunt Annie Stark was murdered at Devil's Jump Off in the early 1940s. I have a copy of the newspaper article entitled "Brutal Kurder by Human Fiend". Annie Stark (nee Pockrandt) was the divorced mother of two daughters. She worked as a housekeeper for a Jentz who lived on the road towards the Boehne place, near the old Dhaene place. She had a boyfriend whose last name was Wolters. He was a mechanic in Arlington. He had borrowed $600 from Annie and she wanted to be paid back. He told her to meet him at Devil's Jump Off and he would repay her. Instead, he beat her over the head with a tire iron and put her in her car. His intent was to push the car over the cliff to make it look like a car accident. However, some neighbors drove by returning to their farm (I think the Art Just place) and Wolters got scared and ran off. However, he lost a shoe in the farm field. His shoe later helped identify him. Incidentally, both he and Annie are buried in the Arlington Cemetery, not very far from each other.

The 1936 murder of Anna Stark at Devil's Jump-Off was indeed a tragedy. The reports above add to the story that is only briefly chronicled in "Henderson: Then and Now."

Meanwhile, you'll have to read all the way to the end of "An account of the curious events at Devil's Jump-Off" to find out where a body was suspected of being buried. No, it's NOT at Devil's Jump-Off. If you're planning to be at Christmas Expo this Sunday (December 6) I'll be there signing books.

It's not too late to log a story you have about Devil's Jump-Off on this website. We're awarding three signed books to the best stories. Winners will be announced next week on this space.

Here's just a few of the real-life people from Henderson, 1919, who appear in the story, "An account of the curious events at Devil's Jump-Off": Alfred "Fritz" Kelm, Earl "Swede" Johnson, Howard Harmeyer, Henry Gabbert, Charles "Colonel" Daugs, Al Behm, Jules Kelm...and there's more, including, of course, Dr. Jacques Duclos and Win Working, in leading roles. Plus the answer to the mystery: What REALLY happened out at Devil's Jump-Off? We'll see you at Wild Edge Event Center tomorrow (Sunday, December 6) where we'll be visiting and signing books from 2 to 4 pm. 100% of the proceeds go to the Joseph R. Brown Minnesota River Center.

Announcing the three winners in the "Best Devil's Jump-Off" stories. One goes to Lu Dibbert Grack for the story of her aunt, Anna Stark, who met her demise at Devil's Jump-Off some time in the mid-1930s; a second to David Tesch - not for a story but for the picture he sent me (above on this web page) of the End of the World cliffs (he told me the note on the back of the old photo dates it as 1933; a third to Cindy Reinitz for elaborating on the Anna Stark story. (Anna Stark was her great aunt.) We'll get signed copies of the book to each of you. Thanks to all who bought books on Sunday at the Christmas Expo signing. The JRB Center thanks you for the support.
