Heard from Sheila Halloran Soukup in Alaska: “Captain Matthew Soukup, son of Jerry and Sheila Soukup, formerly of New Prague and St Thomas, was involved in a harrowing evacuation the rescue mission off of Al Asad Air base in Iraq on January 8, 2020, the night it was hit by 11 Iranian Qiam 1 precision theater ballistic missiles. An article recently appeared on the JBER website detailing the events. (Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.) Up until now it wasn’t publicly disclosed. The HC-130J Combat King II was under the command of 26th ERQS pilot Capt. Soukup who flew two flights evacuating personnel from the base not really knowing what threat was coming. Matthew believes their flight was the last to leave the base before it was hit. On the second flight shortly after lift off they heard over the radio that bases in Iraq were being hit with missiles. This is one account from that night where many on base were trying to reach safety in the confusion of war. For the full article go to jber.jb.mil al asad, it was posted Sept 24, 2021. Jerry, Sheila and brother Michael are grateful that Matthew and his crew were safe and for the great training he received in the Air Force. Matthew is a member of the 211th Rescue Squadron in the Alaska Air National Guard.” We are St. Thomas proud, Sheila, and keeping Matt’s safety in our prayers.
From Kay McMillen’s funeral program: “Irish Family Blessing, May love connect us, Faith direct us, and God protect us.” The blessing is Irish, but works for everybody.
