Is anyone else as upset about the loss last Saturday? Why couldn't the punter dance around or run through the end zone?

Frustrating.

The Gophers last few seasons have been just like this. Stringing us along to make us believe that this is the year. Find a way to win! Upper echelon (sp) teams win those games. Don't be afraid to succeed! Grrrrrrrrrr!

Glen Mason has proven again that his team can win a couple games a year but he really can't coach his way out of a wet paper bag.
How can they not get one first down to finish the game?

Will the Gophers win another football game this year? Yikes. USC might win by 50 points on Saturday

OK - maybe, MAYBE we might beat Northern Illinois. Probably not.

I'm thinking Turek or Murph should take over.

Nothing good can come with scheduling teams like South Dakota. If you beat them, you're supposed to and by a decent margin. If you lose to them, you're the laughing stock of the Big Ten. I had a good chuckle.

Skeddy writes "the Gophers last few seasons have been just like this."

How about the last 50 seasons? I am still on record as saying that things like this are the only reason I have any interest in Gopher football at all. Sure if they'd go to the Rose Bowl I'd watch and want them to win, and you can call me bandwagon for that, but if sports are supposed to be entertainment for us as we grind through life's day to day attrition, then this is what is entertaining/intruiging about the gophers football program. Recently saw the odds for winning the Big 10, and it started at 5-1 and grew gradually to 100-1, which were the odds of the eighth and ninth teams. The bottom two teams, the Gophers and Indiana, had 1000-1 odds of winning the bit 10. I thought that a pretty tremendous jump, 100-1 all the way to 1000-1.

The worst part is that it wasn't something fluky, but SoDak moved the ball with little difficulty. The Gophers were 30 point favorites. Ish.

Notice I wrote that five years ago though too. Jeesh been a while since we've discussed Gopher football on here. Funny that the topic really hasn't changed either. Read something funny in today's Strib. Read below. We were favored by 30???? Can't see how or why?

Brewster quote regarding this week's upcoming game>>>>
"I love the fact that USC's coming in this week. Coming off a tough loss, our kids are going to be excited to play," Brewster said. "We're not going to have to challenge our guys to get excited."

If they have to challenge their players to get excited to play Division I college football week in and week out there's a major problem here. Do you think he says in the locker room before a game, "Okay come on kids if we win today I'm taking you all to McDonald's after the game." Whoopie!!

Five years between Gopher discussions, that about says it all. Sorry Skeddy, that's funny man.

Ski-U-Mah.

At least they got a new stadium. They have a much greater value to the sports pulse of this area, both financially and emotionally, than the Minnesota Vikings.

Could the beat-down this Saturday be as bad as the the 1986 63-0 drubbing by Barry Switzer and the Sooners.
There also was the 48-0 game in 1989 against the Cornhuskers.
The minute I heard the Gophs had scheduled a game against USC I thought about the two games I listed above. I just hope that Punky Brewster's Boys can keep within 4 touchdowns.

I recall an 84-13 affair in the early-mid 80's at the dome against Nebraska as well. Was that the Mike Rozier era?

I'm thinking Reusse bet Sid on that game against Nebraska in '83 and spotted him 63 points. 63 + 13 = 76 & as you say - Nebraska put up 84. Reusse wins the bet.

Dean Steinkuhler had more pancakes that game than Reusse could eat at an all you can eat pancake breakfast.

Turner Gill & Steinkuhler doing the FUMBLEROOSKI @ the '84 Orange Bowl was probably the best play ever by a lineman. Plus FUMBLEROOSKI is fun to say.

Don't be suprised if the Gophers win Saturday's game outright. Overconfident west coast kids on probation with no hopes at a Bowl game, and a Rodent team that will no doubt be ready to come out flying after last weekend's upset. The lower bowl at TFC will be jam packed and rockin', and USC will not have endured the wrath of 30,000 screaming faithful.

This is Skeddy's theory in reverse, the Gophers have nothing to lose and the USCs have nothing to gain.

Skoal!

Remember that the '83 Nebraska and '86 Oklahoma teams ran mostly option/wishbone offenses...that's a lot of points scored by running the ball. I wonder how many rushing yards those teams had against the Gophs.

Gopher Historical Stats
http://ericthrall.com/gophers/football/

Upon further review Dean Steinkuhler should have been ruled down at about the one yard line...great clip nonetheless.

Won't happen...President Bruininks is retiring at the end of the year and Maturi's contract ends in 2012. Too much instability and no good coach will want this jobs. You can only hope that the new president sacks Maturi and Brew.

Brewster made it a few weeks longer than I thought.

Any thoughts on who will be the next guy? Some retread? Some new up and comer? Maybe get some young coach from a winning program?

What is Mike Leach doing? Forget that - we probably don't have enough storage sheds for him.

Terry Turek? He's a former Gopher plus he's got "Head Coach" on his resume unlike the guy who just got fired.

I agree w/ Skeddy.
Kill had more wins this season at TCF Bank Stadium than his predecessor did in 2010.
I did a little research comparing Kill's coaching resume to other coaches. Most of the guys below had no head coaching experience prior to landing their big time job.

Coaching position in parentheses:
Chris Petersen, Boise St
1987–1988 UC Davis (freshman)
1989–1991 UC Davis (WR)
1992 Pittsburgh (QB)
1993–1994 Portland State (QB)
1995–2000 Oregon (WR)
2001–2005 Boise State (OC)
2006–present Boise State (Head Coach)

Joe Tiller
1965–1970 Montana State (OL/DL)
1971 Washington State (DL)
1972–1973 Washington State (OC/OL)
1974–1982 Calgary Stampeders (assistant)
1983–1986 Purdue (AHC/DC/DL)
1987–1988 Wyoming (OC/OL)
1989–1990 Washington State (AHC/OC/OL)
1991–1996 Wyoming (Head Coach)
1997–2008 Purdue (Head Coach)

Barry Alvarez, Wisconsin
1979–1986 Iowa (LB
1987 Notre Dame (LB)
1988–1989 Notre Dame (DC)
1990–2005) Wisconsin (Head Coach)

Kirk Ferentz, Iowa
1977 Connecticut (GA)
1978–1979 Worcester Academy (OL/DC)
1980 Pittsburgh (GA)
1981–1989 Iowa (OL)
1990–1992 Maine
1993–1995 Cleveland Browns (OL)
1996–1998 Baltimore Ravens (OL)
1999–present Iowa (Head Coach)

Jerry Kill – Minnesota
1985-87 Pittsburg St, Kansas (DC)
1988-89 Webb City H.S. Missouri (HC)
1990-93 Pittsburg St (OC)
1994-98 Saginaw Valley State, MI Head Coach
1999-2000 Emporia St, Kansas Head Coach
2001-07 Southern Illinois, Head Coach
2008-2010 Northern Illinois, (Head Coach)

I was aware of that...the Kill jokes seem kind of "played" already. Sounds like the coach has a good sense of humor about his name.

Kinda like, "You Kill-ed our chances of ever winning a Big Ten championship Maturi!" Or, "You're Kill-ing me Smalls!" Or even, "She's got the looks that Kill!" Alright I got a bit off track there.
I do hope he does well though. Seems like a genuine sorta guy.

"Winter Kill"

Workers scrambled to clear 12 inches of snow off
TCF Field prior to yesterday's Gophers tilt with Nebraska. Maybe they should've left the snow, as the Gophers could've used some help in slowing a Cornhuskers ground attack that amassed 424 rushing yards in a 46-12 victory in front of 24,454 shivering fans.

Members of the Gophers offense huddled tightly to provide shelter from the brisk, northwest November winds that dipped windchills well past 20 below zero. The Gophers spread offense struggled to hold onto the frozen pigskin, fumbling four times and completing just 12-of-36 pass attempts. Three Gophers receivers suffered broken fingers and many fell victim to frost bite.

"In for the Kill"

The Gophers mens football team scored a 36-18 victory over Indiana Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium, and players afterwards said they were motivated by the courage displayed by coach Jerry Kill, who kept the team focused and prepared all week despite a painful ear infection.

"Coach was battlin' it all week," said junior lineguard Lance Shuggs. "Sometimes he would just wince in pain, man, he said swallowin' was real hard and stuff. We all decided 'bout Tuesday or so that we were in it for the Kill, you know, like Coach Kill. It kinda became our theme for the week. We even had t-shirts made at Evolution."

58 to zip - holy cow. The spread for the Wisconsin game might be 40.

Do they really need to do a half back option? That seemed overKILL to me.

What a horrible game today against Northwestern. In the first half the defense didn't even touch the running back on numerous plays. Starting QB gets hurt and comes off the field unexpectedly. One would think they should be coached to fall down so the backup and coaches have time to react.

Lots of dumb play calls, especially the 4th and goal at the end of the game where the QB looks like he threw it away. High percentage plays are needed down there not fades.

Fire Kill.

Big win today for the Gophers as they are now bowl eligible. It's a fun team to watch mature with the Mankato kid at QB, who is a true freshman. The big running back is a sophomore and the O-line is all freshman and sophomores. Big things are yet to come for the team.

This will be the first time in years that the Gophers will be going to a bowl game. Hopefully they sign Kill to a big extension before one of the West Coast colleges snap him up. Kill is really doing an outstanding job.

What a great moral victory by the Gophers last night - truly outstanding. The Gophers, who were double digit underdogs, held their own against a top flight team. It's good to see a disciplined team -as Kill said about the Barker blowup 'I run a disciplined program' - just glad the Gophers didn't take any dumb penalties against Tech.

I'm really looking forward to next year's season. Including moral victories I'm thinking the Gophers should win 10 games or so.

Blowing a 7-point lead with 70 seconds to play and to lose in regulation. Leaves me wondering which is the more appropriate response -

"The Tradition Continues."

or

"They are who we thought they were."

Big tilt Saturday for the Gophers - will it be a blow out, morel victory, or a big win? Game time temp should be in the 20's so that should be interesting for the kids from south of the Dayson Mixon line. Odds makers have it at about a 15 point spread in favor of the Budgers but then again who would have thunk a few years after the Kill hire, the team would be ranked higher than Michigan, Nebraska, Penn State and USC? Weird - I'm craving some mushrooms.

Sounds like everyone's picking the Gophers to cover the 16pt spread but will lose to Bucky the Badger. Our leading receiver is out (Engel) so someone will have to step up. WI's defense held Indiana w/o a touchdown in their 51-3 drubbing last week. IU's offense ranks 17th nationally and WI held them to 3pts last Saturday. Gophers have already had a great season in this rebuilding process by Coach Jerry Kill. One thing though. If the Gophers do win and you watch on ESPN, look for two guys in ski masks storming the field.
